waterpik ultra water flosser wp100Gum disease, either periodontal disease or gingivitis are exceptionally common in the adult population. These diseases of the gum are mainly due to poor dental hygiene and lack of regular checkups at a dental surgery.

Gingivitis appears as a swelling and inflammation of the gum. It will become a little tender and bleed easily. If you regularly have bleeding when brushing, even quite gently, this is a good indicator of gingivitis. At this point there is not yet any internal damage to the bone structure but if the disease worsens over time without any dental intervention and a change of dental practice, this can easily develop into the more serious periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease concerns the bones and surrounding tissue structures which become damaged at first and ultimately destroyed.  This is completely irreversible but it can be halted in its tracks and stopped from worsening further.  Very tender, sore and bright red gums are the most common signs that periodontal disease has taken hold.

Treatment for both can be carried out simply by cleaning teeth very thoroughly, flossing well (more about that in a moment) and eating far less plaque building foods. That means less sugary and processed foods and less of the foods and drinks known to cause tartar and plaque build up.

Most people brush teeth but not the gentle thorough two minutes recommended. Ask your dental hygienist how to do it properly or watch the dental hygiene videos on this site!

Most people however, do not floss.  This can be because their gums bleed (you must ignore that) or because it is awkward, time consuming or they cannot be bothered.

It is only when disaster strikes and a dentist tells you that you have gum disease, that suddenly the penny drops.

Today you can do a very through job of cleaning teeth properly and flossing with the Waterpik Ultra Water Flosser. This device will remove plaque and food debris from below the gum line and leave your whole mouth, teeth, tongue and gums very clean. Those wearing orthodontics can also floss with water. It is a simple one minute job before the two minute brush. Some people like to water floss after brushing as well to finally rinse off.

Both periodontal and gingivitis are slow developers. If you have no signs yet, then keep it that way and invest in the future of your teeth and healthy gums. Regular trips to the dentist, regular descaling and a good water flossing system, such as the Waterpik (see video) are all you need to avoid gum disease and keep teeth and gums healthy till old age.
